Apart from finding the term pragmatist on The DailyKos a little hard to fathom...

What have the Pragmatists done that was so bad?

End of recision, End of discrimination based on pre-existing conditions, expansion of Medicaid, and Billions of dollars worth of subsidies to people who can't Afford Health Insurance?

I thought that was a Liberal dream; until it wasn't.

I must have been mistaken that it had something to do with the evils of teh Obama!

Remember that acquaintance you saw the other day? The one who doesn't follow politics near as much as you do? Maybe they describe their politics as "moderate" or "somewhat conservative". They've never told you about their politics, actually, because - well, you two have never actually discussed politics. Because that's not always the first thing that comes up in conversation with this person you see only on occasion.

And, that's okay.

But. . .

wouldn't it be great if there were someway to influence that person politically without having to accost them with your political views on one of the few occasions in which you happen to bump into them?

This is directed to those who say:

No public option, no deal

First, I have two observations:

If you are unemployed or do not have very much money you are probably exempt from the mandate.

If you make below 3x the poverty line you will qualify for subsidies that will pay for most, if not all, of your insurance costs.

Important: That is free insurance for people who need it. And sure, it does kind of suck that most of those subsidies are going to go to private insurance companies, but that is the tradeoff we have to make so that those companies can cease recision without failing. Because if there was no mandate there would be nothing stopping people from refusing to buy health insurance until they got sick. If that were the status quo all of the insurance companies would go out of business because they would be spending more on hospital bills then they would be taking in in premiums.

I love to debate, but I'm not huge on rhetoric. Or platitudes. I am not going to make an emotional appeal(unless you consider pointing out that No Bill will result in 45,000 deaths per year an emotional appeal).

What I am going to do is lay down the parameters for a fair debate using logic, argumentation, refutation, and facts. In order to do so I am going to have to take a two-tiered approach.

There is a battle going on. A battle which I believe may determine the future of the Democratic Party. The battle is between two main factions. On the one side we have the Pragmatic Liberals(that's us). On the other we have those who wish to make the perfect the enemy of the good.

If Health Care Reform does not pass, it will be the Democrats(that's us) Waterloo.

If Health Care Reform does not pass, Americans who don't have to die will die.

If Health Care Reform does not pass, more Americans will go bankrupt as a result of medical bills

If Health Care Reform does not pass, Republicans win. And Americans lose.

Okay. I thought I knew the answer to this question, but now I'm not so sure. I thought everyone would be eligible for the public option, but I think I may have been wrong about that.

However, I really need to know. I've tried researching it. I couldn't find anything useful under the many different variations of the search terms I was using. What I really need is someone who knows the answer to this question and can provide me with sources. I realize that the pulic option is not super-clearly defined, but I also know that there must be some roundabout estimates or some analysis or something somewhere.

Making this diary was the only thing I could think of to do. The community here is very smart about these issues and I just know that someone here will be able to answer my question. Once my question is sufficiently answered I will delete this diary if that is the wish of the community.

Let's steal the (insert-name-here)Care memefrom the right-wing.

This meme is a lame hold-over from the Clinton administration. Back then, in 1992, right-wingers branded healthcare reform as "HillaryCare". They won that battle, and so now we are seeing them trot out the same tired old meme(of course, they're calling it "ObamaCare" now instead of "HillaryCare"). But while this is a very tired old meme, it is also a meme that has worked it's way into the mainstream conciousness. Because of this, it can be useful to us.

As Democrats, liberals, and progressives, hopefully we have all read at least some George Lakoff. Mr. Lakoff does a very good job of detailing the immense difference between the messaging capabilites of the Democrats versus the Republicans. Messaging can make all the difference, and in my opinion, does- when it comes to almost every important issue.

In today's posting I'm going to try to detail the importance of messaging when it comes to policy issues, provide some examples of political messaging in the past along with some current examples of Republican messages that have gone viral, and I will conclude with a very important progressive message I heard today that I would like to see become viral and how we can do that.

This year I injected myself into the political discussion. Me. I didn't care that I lacked an extensive political knowledge base or that I had never really taken the time to engage in productive political discussion before. I felt that it was a resonsibility that must not be passed on. Everyone has a responsibility to at the very least lend their voice to the national will. I have lots of things I would like to see changed in this country. I would like to see civil liberties restored. I'd like to see an administration that does not feel it necessary to shred the constitution in order to torture individuals. I'd like to see immigration reform. I'd like to see discrimination against LGBT folks ended. I'd like to see voting percentages rise. I make no bones about the fact that I'd like to see marijuana legalized.

All of these things fall under the banner of Human Rights. And here in Idaho, this is our banner.
